3 Severe Radiator Issues That Warrant Help From An Auto Repair Shop

by Hugh Lowe

The radiator is one of the more important components of your vehicle, as it's responsible for transferring thermal energy for the purpose of cooling your engine. Any time the following issues are present with your radiator, it's important to take your vehicle to an auto repair shop.

Faulty Thermostat

Although the thermostat isn't attached directly to the radiator, it does play an important role in controlling how much coolant goes through the radiator. Any time you experience issues with it, take your vehicle to an auto repair shop immediately.

Professionals will be able to diagnose the culprit, whether it's faulty wiring or simply a bad thermostat altogether. If the thermostat does need to be replaced, the auto repair shop can recommend a particular model that's compatible with your vehicle's radiator. They'll also test it out after installing the new unit, making sure it's performing optimally.

Leaking Radiator Hoses

The radiator hoses are connected to the radiator and the engine. They are what transport coolant between both systems, and any time you suspect a leak with them, be sure to get help from an auto repair shop.

They'll examine your radiator hoses from top to bottom. If the leak is minor, they may be able to patch the structurally compromised area. If the hoses are damaged too much -- though -- they can install new radiator hoses on your vehicle. Like radiator thermostats, the repair shop will make sure the hoses are compatible with your particular type of vehicle.

Radiator Leak

One of the more serious issues you may experience with your radiator at some point is when it develops a leak. This is a much more problematic issue compared to leaking radiator hoses, and almost always warrants help from a repair shop.

Professionals here will thoroughly examine your radiator, seeing where the leak is coming from. A lot of times they can develop a patch like they can with hoses. Just keep in mind the repair may take quite a bit longer and cost more money. It's important to have the leak patched so that your radiator works as it should.

Radiators are pivotal systems for any vehicle, but they won't run perfectly forever. Any time you run into a major issue with yours, don't hesitate to get help from an auto repair shop. Experienced professionals can troubleshoot various radiator issues and get this component back to working great again.
